In this post, we’ll share with you 5 Key strategies to scoring a 30 or above on the ACT Math section. These strategies are tried and true, and tend to be very effective for students that we have helped prepare for the ACT exam. Time Management v. Content Weakness The first strategy is a high-level strategy used to hone in on whether your greatest weakness on the ACT Math section is time management or content weakness. The first step to diagnosing your weakness is to take a diagnostic practice exam where you time yourself. If you find that you have run out of time, but still have questions to answer, continue answering them; just make sure to record the amount of time it took you to complete the diagnostic exam. Once you have finished the diagnostic exam, score your exam. While scoring your exam, pay attention to two things: The types of questions that you missed. Did you have a hard time answering geometry questions or word problems correctly? If so, note the content that these questions draw on and design a study plan to review the specified content and concepts that you experienced difficulty with. How many questions you answered after the 60-minute time limit. Remember, the ACT Math section has 60 questions and a 60-minute time limit. Geeks on a Plane and BarCamp Shanghai

Geeks on a Plane and BarCamp Shanghai This past week has been a really interesting for the startup scene in Shanghai.   The big catalyst was the Geeks on a Plane tour organized by Dave McClure of the FoundersFund and George Godula of Web2Asia.   This trip brought a number of entrepreneurs, bloggers, and venture capitalists from the US and Europe to Tokyo, Beijing, and Shanghai to learn about the tech scene in Asia.   The Geeks on a Plane tour also led into two other events:   TEDx Shanghai and BarCamp Shanghai. Barcamp Shanghai was on Sunday, and about 120 people attended this un-conference for presentations and networking.   We even got a chance to do a short presentation about how we think connecting people over the internet is leading to major changes in language learning.   Many thanks to the organizers, which includes one of our team members (Toffler).   We had a great time and met a lot of interesting people. On Monday, the Geeks tour was present at TEDx Shanghai, where there was a full day of presentations (you can catch the videos here).   We managed to meet a few of the Geeks after the presentations and also at the Geeks and Glamour after party.   Here are just a few of the people we wanted to give a mention to: Dave McClure Mark Hendrickson Benjamin Joffe Dan Martell Dug Song Adriana Gasciogne Larry Chiang Marcus Nelson Overall it was a really exciting time to be in Shanghai and in the technology space.   Hopefully, it wont be another year before we see an event like this again! How to Get Your Child Ahead of the Rest When the word education is mentioned usually there are positive intentions in mind. In America today the demand for education is growing exponentially, because of growing demand the competition for college placement is fierce. To stay a step ahead of the rest in the professional world, your child will need more than an average bachelors degree. Currently securing a job in the United States requires a superior education. The professional business services industry (knowledge based) is expanding in the US, it has grown from 14 million in 1997 to 18 million in 2007, this statistical change demonstrates a shift in industry dominance. The manufacturing industry (labor intensive) at one time employing most Americans is decreasing in size dramatically. Manufacturing jobs have decreased by more than 2 million in a single decade. This trend is not slowing, in the US the scale is tipping drastically towards a dominant knowledge based industry. Soon concerns for your child’s level of education may weigh you down like a ton of bricks. Thirty years ago a bachelors degree would equal a steady career and bright future for the young graduate, today, a bachelors degree might not even get your foot in the door. Parents today must contribute to their child’s education, now, more than ever. College, which was once the final step towards a good career is now only the beginning. Though competition is heated, a college degree is necessary step in the right direction. The graph below provided by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, depicts is a significant correlation between employment and earnings and your child’s education. The best option for parents is to start early and look to engage their child in extra educational activities outside of the classroom. As the United States moves towards a knowledge based society and an exclusively educated workforce many will be left in the trenches. The public school system is in a hole of their own, today our government, school districts, teachers, and parents are looking towards privatized education to better facilitate youth education. Many of these services have always been available; charter schools, private schools, tutoring services, and homeschooling all of these options may be a parents chance to keep their child competitive in today’s “graduation hat race.” Starting your child in a program outside of the classroom can help them perform better within the classroom as well. If children can succeed better at lower levels where education tends to be less expensive then they have a better chance of earning a valuable scholarship for higher education. Don’ wait until it is to late for your child to achieve at the highest level take the right road to educate your child beyond the boundaries of the public school system. Another great way to help your child learn is to integrate fun with education because learning should be an enjoyable activity. Take your child to an art gallery, museum, music center, performing arts theater, or zoo, here kids have an opportunity to learn without even being aware they are. This type of experience might motivate your child’s educational interests for science, history, math, physics, music, and or art.

Andys October Language Challenge Week 2

Andys October Language Challenge Week 2 Andy is our new UX Designer and recently joined the italki team in September.  One of the first things he did was join the italki October Language Challenge as he really needs to improve his Chinese as you can tell from his Public Video Pledge.  Hes graciously offered to blog about his experiences and how he is going to conquer the Challenge!  Take it away Andy This week Ive been naughty.  Since my last post seven days ago, I only took one class! Shame on me! While working it is very difficult to free up some time and save some mental energy to learn a language, especially one so difficult like the Chinese.  I have to say that I have some good excuses for not being able to actually take more classes. In fact in China we had a short weekend, last saturday it was a working day to make up for the long national holidays of the first week of october. Sunday and Monday i was knocked-off by a cold (I swear its not Ebola!) and iIwas not able to focus on nothing really Although, excuses doesnt really help you to learn a language. What is actually helpful is to set up a routine and schedule the classes in advance. At least for me, this should work better. If I know that a class is coming I  can find time to prepare and to arrange my other appointments in my busy calendar. Im sure than making my study time a commitment instead of a filler for my free time will definitely improve the results. Said so, until the end of October I will wake up earlier and take my Chinese classes in the morning before going to work. I used to do the same last year, but it didnt last long because to be able to attend the classes at the Chinese Language Institute before going to work I had to wake up at six in the morning! Commuting to the school and then commuting again to work was taking up 60 to 90 minutes every time. What a waste of time! By taking classes online I will  be able to save all of that commuting time and wake up one hour and a half later. Andys calendar to complete the October Language Challenge Here is my plan: Wake up around 7.30 and review the previous lesson between 8 and 8.30 while having breakfast (instead of the news!). Take one hour class from 8.30 to 9.30, then pack my stuff and go to work. Im lucky enough to live just 15 minutes by bike from the office so i should be able to be at work before 10.  Sounds like a good plan to me! So I already booked all the classes that Im still missing in order to achieve the 12 hours of classes goal. Im planning to be done by the 24th of October, almost a week in advance!
