5 Keys to Scoring a 30 on the ACT Math Section

5 Keys to Scoring a 30 on the ACT Math Section ACT SAT Prep and College Admissions Blog Scoring a 30 or above on the ACT Math section is no easy feat; it takes a lot of preparation and practice! In this post, we’ll share with you 5 Key strategies to scoring a 30 or above on the ACT Math section. These strategies are tried and true, and tend to be very effective for students that we have helped prepare for the ACT exam. Time Management v. Content Weakness The first strategy is a high-level strategy used to hone in on whether your greatest weakness on the ACT Math section is time management or content weakness. The first step to diagnosing your weakness is to take a diagnostic practice exam where you time yourself. If you find that you have run out of time, but still have questions to answer, continue answering them; just make sure to record the amount of time it took you to complete the diagnostic exam. Once you have finished the diagnostic exam, score your exam. While scoring your exam, pay attention to two things: The types of questions that you missed. Did you have a hard time answering geometry questions or word problems correctly? If so, note the content that these questions draw on and design a study plan to review the specified content and concepts that you experienced difficulty with. How many questions you answered after the 60-minute time limit. Remember, the ACT Math section has 60 questions and a 60-minute time limit. If you answered more than 5 questions after the 60-minute time limit, you know that time management is your greatest weakness. On average, you should be spending about a minute per question. There will be some easy problems that you’ll be able to answer in 10 seconds, which will give you more time to spend on the harder questions. To improve on time management or to strengthen content weakness, reviewing the material and completing multiple practice problems in a timed setting is key! It’s a slow, and sometimes grueling process, but the end result is worth it! Try to resolve each problem you answer incorrectly before looking at the correct answer Now that you’ve scored your diagnostic exam, go back to all the questions that you answered incorrectly and try to resolve them. It is important to understand all your mistakes and to resolve each math question until you get the correct answer. The more you understand the question and how to answer it correctly, the more likely you are to answer a similar question correctly on the first try in the future! It is important to understand your mistakes or the reasons you answer a problem incorrectly to prevent the same mistake from occurring again. Eliminate careless mistakes Making a careless mistake on the ACT Math section can be quite costly, and can be the difference in a score of 29 versus a score of 30 or higher on the ACT Math section. Following these three strategies will help you prevent making the most common careless mistakes. Underline keywords and what the problem is asking you to solve. It is so easy for the ACT makers to trick you into solving a problem that wasn’t asked in the question. Underline keywords and what the problem is asking you to solve will ground you in the question and will help ensure that you are answering the correct question. Be careful with calculator entry. A missing parenthesis or adding units before dividing them (Remember PEMDAS/BODMAS) can lead you astray. Write down units or values that you are solving for. For example, if a problem asks you to solve for x+y, write down x+y on your scratch paper as you solve the problem. Again, this strategy will keep you grounded in the question and ensure you answer the question correctly. Memorize all common math facts and formulas A wide range of math content is covered on the ACT Math section, including Pre-Algebra, Elementary Intermediate Algebra, Coordinate Plane Geometry, and Trigonometry. Most high school students will have covered this material by the end of their junior year, so the math content should be familiar to all test takers. However, we recommend that you spend some time reviewing and memorizing basic formulas and math facts. Just knowing common math formulas and facts will save you time on the ACT Math section! If you tend to incorrectly answer geometry based questions, take the time to research and study common geometry formulas and facts, either using online sources or using your math textbook. Then, test yourself by practicing many practice problems. Drilling yourself on common math facts and formulas will give you great practice for solving similar problems on the ACT Math section, and it will equip you to quickly solve the 60 questions on the ACT Math section! Practice, Practice, Practice! The only way to track progress, content retention, and to practice key test-taking strategies on the ACT Math section is to complete many, many practice problems. While completing practice problems or practice tests, make note of problems that you are unsure about. When grading your practice problems or practice test, pay attention to problem solutions for problems that you marked as ‘unsure’ and problems that you missed. This step is important! You need to know how to properly answer questions that you missed, or that you were unsure about and guessed on so that you correctly solve a similar problem in the future. Once reviewing the problem solutions, go back and resolve every problem that you answered incorrectly. This step will help to determine whether or not you truly understand how to solve the problem. This strategy is time-consuming, but it will result in an increased ACT Math score! Geeks on a Plane and BarCamp Shanghai

Geeks on a Plane and BarCamp Shanghai This past week has been a really interesting for the startup scene in Shanghai.   The big catalyst was the Geeks on a Plane tour organized by Dave McClure of the FoundersFund and George Godula of Web2Asia.   This trip brought a number of entrepreneurs, bloggers, and venture capitalists from the US and Europe to Tokyo, Beijing, and Shanghai to learn about the tech scene in Asia.   The Geeks on a Plane tour also led into two other events:   TEDx Shanghai and BarCamp Shanghai. Barcamp Shanghai was on Sunday, and about 120 people attended this un-conference for presentations and networking.   We even got a chance to do a short presentation about how we think connecting people over the internet is leading to major changes in language learning.   Many thanks to the organizers, which includes one of our team members (Toffler).   We had a great time and met a lot of interesting people. On Monday, the Geeks tour was present at TEDx Shanghai, where there was a full day of presentations (you can catch the videos here).   We managed to meet a few of the Geeks after the presentations and also at the Geeks and Glamour after party.   Here are just a few of the people we wanted to give a mention to: Dave McClure Mark Hendrickson Benjamin Joffe Dan Martell Dug Song Adriana Gasciogne Larry Chiang Marcus Nelson Overall it was a really exciting time to be in Shanghai and in the technology space.   Hopefully, it wont be another year before we see an event like this again! How to Get Your Child Ahead of the Rest

How to Get Your Child Ahead of the Rest When the word education is mentioned usually there are positive intentions in mind. In America today the demand for education is growing exponentially, because of growing demand the competition for college placement is fierce. To stay a step ahead of the rest in the professional world, your child will need more than an average bachelors degree. Currently securing a job in the United States requires a superior education. The professional business services industry (knowledge based) is expanding in the US, it has grown from 14 million in 1997 to 18 million in 2007, this statistical change demonstrates a shift in industry dominance. The manufacturing industry (labor intensive) at one time employing most Americans is decreasing in size dramatically. Manufacturing jobs have decreased by more than 2 million in a single decade. This trend is not slowing, in the US the scale is tipping drastically towards a dominant knowledge based industry. Soon concerns for your child’s level of education may weigh you down like a ton of bricks. Thirty years ago a bachelors degree would equal a steady career and bright future for the young graduate, today, a bachelors degree might not even get your foot in the door. Parents today must contribute to their child’s education, now, more than ever. College, which was once the final step towards a good career is now only the beginning. Though competition is heated, a college degree is necessary step in the right direction. The graph below provided by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, depicts is a significant correlation between employment and earnings and your child’s education. The best option for parents is to start early and look to engage their child in extra educational activities outside of the classroom. As the United States moves towards a knowledge based society and an exclusively educated workforce many will be left in the trenches. The public school system is in a hole of their own, today our government, school districts, teachers, and parents are looking towards privatized education to better facilitate youth education. Many of these services have always been available; charter schools, private schools, tutoring services, and homeschooling all of these options may be a parents chance to keep their child competitive in today’s “graduation hat race.” Starting your child in a program outside of the classroom can help them perform better within the classroom as well. If children can succeed better at lower levels where education tends to be less expensive then they have a better chance of earning a valuable scholarship for higher education. Don’ wait until it is to late for your child to achieve at the highest level take the right road to educate your child beyond the boundaries of the public school system. Another great way to help your child learn is to integrate fun with education because learning should be an enjoyable activity. Take your child to an art gallery, museum, music center, performing arts theater, or zoo, here kids have an opportunity to learn without even being aware they are. This type of experience might motivate your child’s educational interests for science, history, math, physics, music, and or art.

Andys October Language Challenge Week 2

Andys October Language Challenge Week 2 Andy is our new UX Designer and recently joined the italki team in September.  One of the first things he did was join the italki October Language Challenge as he really needs to improve his Chinese as you can tell from his Public Video Pledge.  Hes graciously offered to blog about his experiences and how he is going to conquer the Challenge!  Take it away Andy This week Ive been naughty.  Since my last post seven days ago, I only took one class! Shame on me! While working it is very difficult to free up some time and save some mental energy to learn a language, especially one so difficult like the Chinese.  I have to say that I have some good excuses for not being able to actually take more classes. In fact in China we had a short weekend, last saturday it was a working day to make up for the long national holidays of the first week of october. Sunday and Monday i was knocked-off by a cold (I swear its not Ebola!) and iIwas not able to focus on nothing really Although, excuses doesnt really help you to learn a language. What is actually helpful is to set up a routine and schedule the classes in advance. At least for me, this should work better. If I know that a class is coming I  can find time to prepare and to arrange my other appointments in my busy calendar. Im sure than making my study time a commitment instead of a filler for my free time will definitely improve the results. Said so, until the end of October I will wake up earlier and take my Chinese classes in the morning before going to work. I used to do the same last year, but it didnt last long because to be able to attend the classes at the Chinese Language Institute before going to work I had to wake up at six in the morning! Commuting to the school and then commuting again to work was taking up 60 to 90 minutes every time. What a waste of time! By taking classes online I will  be able to save all of that commuting time and wake up one hour and a half later. Andys calendar to complete the October Language Challenge Here is my plan: Wake up around 7.30 and review the previous lesson between 8 and 8.30 while having breakfast (instead of the news!). Take one hour class from 8.30 to 9.30, then pack my stuff and go to work. Im lucky enough to live just 15 minutes by bike from the office so i should be able to be at work before 10.  Sounds like a good plan to me! So I already booked all the classes that Im still missing in order to achieve the 12 hours of classes goal. Im planning to be done by the 24th of October, almost a week in advance! What about you?  Do you have a schedule? How does it look like?  Let me know! See you next week guys!

Silly Holidays Everyone Should Celebrate

Silly Holidays Everyone Should Celebrate Courtesy of flickr user jaci XIII January 3: Festival of Sleep Dayâ€"It’s a great way to recuperate from the holidays, with all the relatives and food and gifts, and prepare for the upcoming return to work and school. Unless you go to places like Maryland, where the Festival of Sleep lasts the entire month of January. February 5: National Weathermans Dayâ€"Tracking and predicating the weather is incredibly difficult. It can change significantly in days or even hours, and everyone in the world depends on their predictions for planning purposes. According to Air Force News, this day is a commemoration of one of the first American weatherman, John Jeffries. March 26: Make Up Your Own Holiday Dayâ€"Squawk Like a Chicken Day, Television Appreciation Day, and Purple Sports Ball Day are all fair game today. April 2: International Childrens Book Dayâ€"The International Board on Books for Youth created this holiday on the birthday of Hans Christian Anderson, the Danish author of fairy tales like The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling, as a way to promote children’s love of reading. Libraries around the world have hours of storytelling and special activities to instill reading as a part of kids’ everyday lives. May 25: National Tap Dance Dayâ€"Former President George H. W. Bush signed a US Joint Resolution into law in November 1989. It was created in honor of Bojangles Robinson’s birthday in 1878. This stuff cannot be made up. June 18: National Splurge Dayâ€"Whether it’s buying a Maserati or eating your own weight in marshmallows, this is the day of doing what you want. There are 364 other days where you are constrained by money woes or health concerns, but today, treat yourself to your deepest desires. You can worry about it tomorrow with a satisfied smile on your face. July 28, 29, 3o: National Milk Chocolate Day, National Lasagna Day, and National Cheesecake Dayâ€"The only reason these three are on the list is because they all happen one right after another. You can actually eat an entire three course meal over the course of three days and consider it three different holidays. Well, that’s if you consider milk chocolate an appetizer, which it totally can be. August 13: International Lefthanders Dayâ€"If you have sinistrophobia, or a fear of the left side, you’d best just stay at home today. Started by Lefthanders’s International in 1976, lefthanders have this entire day to bask in the glory of being different. From problems using scissors to bumping elbows with your neighbor, here’s the one day where lefthanders can do it and not have others yell at them. September 16: Mayflower Dayâ€"In 1620, the Mayflower set sail from England. 102 men, women, and children were on the seas for 66 days before landing in at Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts. They, like all immigrants to the New World, were escaping from the religious and cultural persecutions of Europe. October 1: World Vegetarian Dayâ€"First celebrated in 1977, this day is used to promote awareness of issues that many vegetarians call the origin of their lifestyle. Most are ethically and morally opposed to the meat and fish industries because of their treatment before slaughter. But today’s as good a day as any to try tofu. November 30: Stay at Home Because You are Well Dayâ€"Also known as a mental health day. A copyrighted holiday, it was created by Wellcat.com. You get up every morning and go to class or work. Why not take a day off? You deserve it. But not on the day of a major test or work event. December 31: Make Up Your Mind Dayâ€"A New Year’s resolution is only the tip of the iceberg. As the year comes to a close, you’re finally forced to make some decisions. The calendar is going to change whether or not you’re ready. Just to let you know, October 12 is International Moment of Frustration Day. It’s the perfect reason to procrastinate.
